#LetUsBreathe Collective — Session III

#FreedomSquare: Liberation and healing in a world without police: Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ)

Speakers from #LetUsBreathe Collective

A vacant lot at the obscure intersection of Homan & Fillmore in one of Chicago’s most neglected neighborhoods became the epicenter of international attention on the #BlackLivesMatter movement for 41 days in the summer of 2016. #FreedomSquare was a response of grassroots activists and North Lawndale community members to long term structural violence and oppression on Chicago’s West Side. In confronting the everyday harm of mass incarceration and police brutality/misconduct, #FreedomSquare inspired courage and creativity among those most affected by state violence, while also building relationships to inspire a lifetime of activism. Resiliency and healing were central themes of the occupation from beginning to end.
