Jasmine Banks and Kelly Hurst – Session I

Race-based trauma and the school system

Jasmine Banks (Postpartum Progress, Inc.) and Kelly Hurst (Being Black)

We know that violence transforms the brain. The multi-layered impact of violence, as it relates to wellbeing, resources, and racial identity, confounds trauma and creates an incredibly toxic reaction in vulnerable people. This presentation focuses on the impact of race-based trauma, how trauma impacts the experiences of vulnerable people, and what we can do to counteract the impact of race-based trauma in ourselves and others. As practitioners in the fields of therapy and education, the presenters will talk both about how trauma affects the brain and about the practical applications of this knowledge in school systems.
